  • ISLAMABAD: The government has cancelled a planned parliamentary delegation’s visit to India, National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza told the house on Wednesday. She gave no reason for the cancellation about which she said she had been informed by the government. • ISLAMABAD, Jan 20: The government hinted in the National Assembly on Wednesday it could file another review petition after studying the Supreme Court’s detailed ruling against the controversial Musharraf-era National Reconciliation Ordinance, but dismissed opposition fears of a clash with the superior judiciary. The first review petition on behalf of the government was filed on Saturday, challenging some portions of a short order made on Dec 16 last year by a 17-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry that nullified the NRO from the date of its enforcement on Oct 5, 2007, while the detailed judgment came on Tuesday. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Babar Awan, responding to a speech by opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, told the lower house “the government is examining this judgment” and had “up to 30 days” to file a review petition. He did not say if it would be done, but in what appeared to be strong indication of the government’s desire to use the option, said “an aggrieved party can go court for a review under the Constitution’s article 188” which empowers the Supreme Court to “review any judgment pronounced or any order made by it”.
