There are only two people in my life who have the potential to bring tears in my eyes, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is one of them. A true legend who left us right after when we finished celebrating our Independence Day. NFK — died on August 16 was primarily a traditional Qawwali singer but by introducing innovations in his style of singing and music he made millions of people across the world his fan.
Traditionally, Qawwali has been a family business. Nusrat’s family has an unbroken tradition of performing qawwali for the last 600 years. Among other honorary titles bestowed upon him, Nusrat was called Shahenshah-e-Qawwali, meaning The Emperor of Qawwali and now he has become immortal. Through out the world this Pakistani legend is still being heard and praised.
His Qawwali had nothing to do with complex melodies or utopia but simplicity, his subtle ways of conveying simple message of love was the reason of his fame and glory. He used to sing about the life of the real world and it was the very reason he quickly became popular in common men. We don’t know how much struggle he used to do to present us the finished product but his records were melodious and gentle enough to affect our hearts and minds. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the only singer whose records could repeatedly be heard for hours and I would never get bored.
I have lots of memories attached with the music of of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and its undoubtedly difficult to put into words what makes Nusrat’s music so deeply appealing to the ordinary guy like me who some times don’t even understand the language he used to sing in but the deepest part of Nusrat’s magic lies in the fact that his Qawwali used to resonate my heart with the music so deeply that I could unintentionally become part of his offering.
It took me almost two hours to get his best Qawwali for this post but failed.
His work is ultimate and his every song is “ek say barh ker aik”. May God bless him.

Very well written, Tanzeel! Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was undoubtedly the “Emperor of Qawwali”.
Personally, I like, when Nusrat sang Nasir Kazimi’s “Gham Hay Khushi Hay Tu, Meri Zindagi Hay Tu”. When Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sang last Sher [Maq'ta], “Nasir Is Diyaar Main Kitna Ajnabi Hay Tu, Meri Zindagi Hay Tu” portrayed the sketch of Nusrat Fateh Khan himself. Simplicity in this piece of work was at its peak. Lyrics were simple, but impressive. The style of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was simple, but impressive. These lyrics always bring tears to my eyes.
May Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s soul rest in peace and solace.
: )
Apart from the information provided for NFK, which is equally appreciable, i really liked the manner in which the writer has depicted his feelings cuz at some piont they are in absolute resemblence with mine and many others who yet have to attach a post.
NFK was not the artist who only reigned the hearts in his own region but gained the most coveted popularity by working with iconic names in the Western music like Eddie Vedder, Peter Gabriel and progressive guitarist and producer Michael Brook.
His Sufi Music was almost a revolution which succeeded in captivating many Westernerns like Joan Osborne, late Jeff Buckley as well as Hollywood types like Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins.
Conclusively his collections which were upto 125 albums as of 2001 attained an entry in GUNNESS WORLD OF RECORD, which is not less to hail him for being the ultimate beacon in the music industry.
LOVE NFK FOR EXPLORING AN ENTIRE DIFFERENT WOLRD OF MUSIC.
Thank you!
Very well said.
Nusrat was the best in the industry and one of the greatest if not the greatest humble singer ever known to the world. A master of his work. A unique simplicity style that even western world stood to listen to him. He is very much admired in the western world for providing a new different unique way of music.
Finally, in concerts or recorded album his music was fell ahead of the time and his music work is still being used in the world like recently in the movie Blood Diamond.
