Political (In)tolerance

Politics of Punjab is always unpredictable, renowned politician changing their loyalties without feeling any shame, State Machinery a tool to crush political rivals and in which Rawalpindi has always been a headquarter for political direction seekers.

According to the Official Website of Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Prime Minister Mr. Yousuf Raza Gilani started his political career in 1978 with the platform of PML and was a minster in Gen. Zia ul Haq Cabinet , Abida Hussain now a leader of PPP is among those who were confronting Benazir Government in 1995-96. Mr. Farooq Ahmed Khan Laghari a leader of PML-Q was such a trusted companion of Bhutto Family that he got elected from the Panel of PPP as President of Pakistan in 1993.

The shifting of loyalties at Top level of politics result in swift change of political opinions & belonging at grass root level BUT in most cases a common man stands without his own opinion. For example a few months before People of Punjab opposed any sort of operation against Taliban in Waziristan and / or Swat, even the parliamentarians elected from their constituencies voted in favor of “Nizam-e-Adl Regulation” which is the law to delegate powers of the whole Malakand Agency to Talibans, but now they totally support operation against Talibans in S. Waziristan.

During past few months, the need of a new and progressive leadership has been highlighted again & again by many intellectuals of Punjab. The selection of feudal & businessmen as leaders for nation was once again proved to be a total failure. During the current sugar and flour crisis the silence which the top leadership kept and the support they extended to mill owners & hoarders was an example of how much they care for their own voters. Similarly, the controversy of Kerry Lugar Bill, the French submarines Bribe Case and the Written confession of Mr. Ishaq Dar revealing the money laundering of 14.883 million US $ by Nawaz Shareef clearly  show how much they care about the National Interest.

In the same context, people of Punjab are looking forward for new political parties and new leadership to lead them out of the darkness.

Feeling the field fertile for their message political parties like Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ; both of which are believed to be representatives of educated Youth;  are very aggressive to build their basis in the biggest province which always play a key role in Pakistan’s political scene.

While speaking to a gathering celebrating his 56th birthday, MQM Leader Altaf Hussain announced that MQM would soon organize a very huge convention in Punjab he also ordered his party leadership to establish a full organizational setup throughout the province.

Similarly PTI chief Imran Khan & his workers are struggling hard to spread their message in all urban centers of Punjab.

To make a ground for them in Punjab Politics, first they have to face the state machinery which has political affiliations attached with it. During the long march of lawyer’s movement some TV channels aired the clips of high Police officials were handing their service belts to the leadership of PML-N. On the other hand Zardari administration was trying to crush the movement and deployed thousands of Police Personnel from Sindh.

Last week both PTI & MQM accuses Punjab Government of using state power against them. PTI blames that Punjab Government is showing descrimination by removing their billboards & Banners. Whereas MQM chief Altaf Hussain warned Punjab Government not to threat MQM workers &  local writers for commenting in favor of MQM.  The PML-N leadership denies all these charges stating them as baseless allegations. A story published in DAWN regarding a Land Grabbing Case registered against a DSP of Punjab Police clearly show the courage which the Police Officers enjoy in reward of working against the political rivals of Punjab government.

DSP. Arsalan, now booked in a Land Grabbing case was also pointed by MQM leadership in October for conducting an illegal raid on federal lodges and harassing one of its Rabiita Committee (Central Committee of MQM) Member Saif Yar Khan. More meaningfully this incident occurred at the very next day when MQM Quaid Altaf Hussain delivered a telephonic speech to a gathering of intellectuals & writers in Lahore. On the same evening MQM deputy Parliamentary leader Haider Abbas Rizvi briefed the media in Jauhar Town P.S. that he & other Leaders of MQM are trying to submit a complain of Federal Lodge incident but the S.H.O is out of reach since last 4 hours. Staff present at the police station gave excuse that the SHO doesn’t carry any mobile phone with him neither the vehicle he use for patrolling carry any wireless set.

In case of any political victimization, both the commanding authority & the Executing machinery are equally responsible,  as both are protecting each others ill motives.

Now the time arrives when people should realize the difference between the service rendered by Leadership from elite class and the Leadership arouses from a common man after elected by them. Mustafa Kamal is a living example.

  1. I do not know why some people still consider PTI to be an opportunistic party when it has never played vote or power politics. PTI has alwayz been a party of the people and based its decision on principles.
