The problems faced by Pakistan can be categorized into two, the first category comprises of the issues which directly affect the masses like price hike, sugar crises, street crimes, police related issues and the list continues. The second category doesn’t contain list of problems, it’s basically the root cause behind all evils, which is ‘bad governance’ as the term itself is a problem that is why we place it in a category.
What is bad governance, I believe that our country is being ruled by one law since our independence or if we are much optimistic let us say after the demise of our great father Jinnah, we were ruled by a law which is called “Law of the Power”, Now what is this law of power, it simply is nothing but rule of powerful class over poor class, since than the people who accumulated most power took the government & ruled the country , they don’t follow any ‘law’ or constitution, yes they have their self defined constitution which has clauses like, all benefits for the powerful and all harms for the poor, if somebody is rich he has a right to get favors, if somebody is poor he is an insect and he should remain poor, if somebody tries to enter our circle from poverty line block his way, in brief their constitution defines one slogan i.e. No law for us and all laws for the poor, No punishment for us just punish the poor.
If we analyze our rulers’ right from 51 to 08, we’ll learn that a powerful group of people ruled the country; some people refer this group as ‘Establishment’. This group comprises of rich landlords, industrialists, bureaucrats, Generals and dirty rich elite class turned politicians. They have good links in society. Police, Judiciary, Parliament, Armed Forces and Media served them and that is how 1% cream of our society rules us. As there is no law stopping this powerful class whether they sit in opposition or government the virus is flown till the grass route, As a result of ‘Law-Less’ governance, if the higher-ups are corrupt who’ll stop the lower ones, if the higher-ups in any organization don’t have any ethics why their junior officers should bother to follow any law. just visit any police station, the SHO is the king of his area, he can pick any person, can stop any women can beat any student if he knows that the victim belongs to the poor class, the people who have some links with powerful class or they have money are immune, the SHO presents tea & samosa to the son of a rich businessman who was ‘accidentally caught’ by his junior cops, who caught red handed beating any poor insect or teasing any poor girl, but if a poor girl approaches the police station without any ‘reference’ misery becomes her fate. The powerful class also makes cartels to loot & plunder poor, they join hands offline & make schemes to control prices, recent examples of Sugar crises, Land scandal & power scandal are good examples. Few years ago the prices of land and residential plots shook like a rocket and sale purchase of land pieces was the most profitable business, when the families behind the plan took their share, prices went down again, another example our Sugar mafia is going to beat the Italian mafia families soon. These are just some examples how bad governance or the rule of Powerful class creates problems, a brief conclusion is that our nation is being driven by in-competent drivers whose motive was not to reach anywhere, but to drive & enjoy, so how can we be destined until we change the driver. Now lets analyze a practical solution.
The question is how bad governance can be turned into good, answer is only if good people become rulers, again how ‘good’ people could reach the throne, the most obvious answer is people can select good amongst them & make them responsible to rule. This process is followed in almost all parts of the developed world & is called democracy. It certainly has weak points and the system isn’t perfect but at least it is better than the ways practiced in under-developed countries. The soul of democracy depends upon accountability which can only be achieved by a free and fair judicial system. The representatives elected by people should follow ‘rules of law’ and if they don’t follow, Judiciary should be daring enough to keep them on track.
But here my pen stops as our homeland Pakistan is a democratic country isn’t it? Elections are held, people choose the obvious candidates but still we are unable to find good souls & the powerful class injects their members in parliament. The reason of failure is obvious as I wrote people choose ‘the most obvious candidate’ means the person who spends millions and billions in his campaign, the person who is capable to buy votes and the person who is strong enough to threaten weak candidates is the one who is the most obvious one and eventually we always earned a sham democracy. Only powerful got the ticket and if any person shows his tendency towards people, his way is blocked, don’t go far away Aitzaz Ahsan is the best example, ordinary man cannot think in his best dream to contest the general elections, he remains worker for lifetime, if by chance of luck any common or good soul rises above and joins higher ranks of any party, he is sidelined. We have been revolving in a circle since we got independence, just imagine representative of a village or town is a person who never purchased bread or onion in his whole life, who is dependent on mineral water and air conditioned echo system, how can such a person imagine the pain of a common man, when every month he has to think about the electricity bill and water bill. When strong legislators know that they can take loan of billions and they need not to worry about returning it , because there is nobody in the government or judiciary to ask about it, that billions will be paid by the blood of poor, The common man pays all the taxes both direct and indirect, whenever he purchases a soup costing ten rupees, he pays Rs.6 as sales tax and others.
When one of my friend argued with me why people are so happy that the honorable Chief Justice is reinstated , a dictator is forced to resign and NRO is struck down, still our problems are still un-resolved, I replied we are taking right steps to correct our direction, If we manage to achieve ‘rule of law’, we shall be a happy nation one day, and if we prefer to be ruled like sheep and goats with no rights and voice, believe me the Great Akbar if he comes from his grave cannot take us out.
If a car has to reach South but its direction is towards North, will it reach its destination? Obviously No, no matter how fast it runs, but if the direction is right, even if the car driver drives it as slow as one km per hour, one day it will achieve its target.
Pakistan is at the point of no-return, adios past!

Very honestly and well written, Adeel!
Thanks Shahid
rule of elite class is a reality,
you have nicely put together a deep analysis
Good description of the problems and very focussed analysis.
Thanks Aqeel!
Adeel: I understand that Pakistan has a lot of problems, but Pakistan is not past the point of no return and change can alwayz come, it took France 200 years to change, historically there never was evidence of a point of no return. Change can alwayz come no matter how long or how bad thingsd have gone. Best example is of how Prophet Muhammed SAW changed Arabia and the world.
Pakistan is changing! Do you not see the youth rising up? Do you not seee the independant judiciarry? Cant you see the rising popularity of Great people like Imran Khan and Zaid Hamid? Soon politicians like Imran Khan will be elecdted in next 5 years, maximum 10. Pakistan is changing and the change will come in thenext 15 -20 years into a beautiful country. Our nation is great and so are our people!
Ambitious and optimistic youth will surely take us towards right path, I agree with this Mustafa!
